Professional online interview

Online interviews are now a regular part of the recruitment process. While the setting is different from a traditional in-person interview, how you prepare and present yourself still determines the impression you make. Here are some practical tips to help you feel confident and perform at your best.

1. Set up your environment

Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background. Make sure the light is in front of you so your face is visible and your expressions can be seen clearly. Avoid clutter or distracting items behind you.

2. Test your equipment

Check your camera, microphone, and internet connection in advance. If possible, do a test call with a friend to ensure everything works smoothly. Use earphones or a headset to improve sound quality and minimise background noise.

3. Be punctual

Join the meeting five minutes before the scheduled start time. This shows professionalism and gives you time to settle in, check your sound and video again, and start the interview calmly.

4. Dress professionally

Treat your online interview the same way you would an in-person one. Choose smart, professional clothing that helps you feel confident.

5. Nonverbal communication

Your nonverbal cues play a big role in how you are perceived. Try sit up straight with relaxed shoulders and maintain steady eye contact by looking at the camera rather than the screen. Smile naturally and use light gestures when appropriate to show engagement. Try avoid fidgeting, slouching, or looking away too often.

Try avaid readying from your CV rather use it only as references to prompt key points. Avoid filler words such as “um” or “like,” and pause briefly before answering to gather your thoughts and maintain a composed, confident tone.

6. Prepare thoroughly

Research the company and the role you are applying for. Be ready to explain how your experience and skills align with the position. If possible, mention a few facts about the company to demonstrate genuine interest and preparation.

7. Ask thoughtful questions

Have two or three questions prepared about the company culture, team structure, or next steps in the process. This shows curiosity, critical thinking, and enthusiasm for the opportunity.

8. Keep your documents ready

Keep a copy of your CV and any supporting material easily accessible on your computer. You may need to refer to them if asked about specific experience or achievements.

9. End the interview professionally

Thank the interviewer for their time, express your continued interest in the position, and ask about the next steps in the process. Afterward, send a brief thank-you email to reinforce your professionalism and appreciation.

Final thought:

Online interviews may take place on a screen, but the fundamentals of preparation, respect, and confidence remain the same. The more you prepare, the more naturally your personality and professionalism will come through.
